BEAU W BEAKHOUSE is an artist and writer based in Cardiff. Working with installation, film, text and sound, they consider relations between postcolonialism, labour and speculative fiction, often using woodcraft and metalwork to trace production processes, materials, and the boundary between traditional/hypermodern. They have a collaborative practice with Sadia Pineda Hameed and co-founded LUMIN, an open collective working with language, print, radio, pedagogy and place.
Their exhibition ‘it resonates like spalting wood’ with Sadia Pineda Hameed speculated on the future of communication, creating a utopic space using traditional green woodwork and film. ‘adzing planes like waning moons’ continued an interest in botanical colonialism and the possibilities of telepathy, social space and science-fiction. Performances ‘PAMPHLET BOMB’ and ‘Borrow Tomorrow’, followed a thread of thinking about the near-future, the boundaries between fact and fiction, radical print and postcolonial theory. Residencies at Tangent Projects in Barcelona, Centrum Kultury ZAMEK in Poznan, UNIDEE Groundwork for Embedded Practice in Biella and UNITE in Cardiff enabled time for research and collaboration.
More widely, they have shown work with The Mosaic Rooms, Chapter, Jerwood, Cittadellarte - Fondazione Pistoletto, Gentle/Radical, Arcade Campfa, Centrum Kultury ZAMEK, Freelands, Tangent Projects, Glynn Vivian, g39, Peak, MOSTYN, Literature Wales, Made in Roath, Wales Millenium Centre and others. They are currently on the Freelands Fellowship 2022-24. They have a performance at Jerwood space in December, and an upcoming exhibition at Catalyst Arts.
